Makeup and Skincare for a Picture-perfect Face!

Being a Fashionista of sorts, My love for Makeup and SkinCare products is as big as my love for shoes! I have very sensitive skin and I am limited to what I can apply to my face and skin. Even some of the most expensive products don't work for me. So I had to just shop around and find products that were made for sensitive skin as well as produce the results that I was seeking. The following are a few of my favorites:

OCetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar – This is a gentle non-alkaline, non-soap cleansing bar. It moisturizes as it cleans and is free of harsh detergents that can irritate the skin. www.cetaphil.com or Fine Drugstores.

As you can see, the products listed are not at all expensive, but they work just as good if not better, than those of leading Department Store brands. I have tried all kinds and types, expensive department store brands and non-expensive drugstore brands. You have to find the product that works best for you and your particular skin type and tone. Sometimes breakouts are not caused by the products that you use, but sharing the products you use with others. Bacteria grows everywhere and anywhere, including on makeup brushes, counters, and those who you allow to utilize your makeup mechanicals.

So…......choose products that are great for your skin type and skin tone. Products that produces the results that you are seeking. It will be a task of shopping around, testing, and choosing. Do not make this task difficult, after all it is your face and skin that's at stake and you want to put your best face forward!

Best Natural Skincare and Scientific System Combination

The best skincare solution will be the combination of both natural skincare products and scientific system application. Does Olay® Regenerist™ "regenerate skin’s appearance, renewing it outer layer one cell at a time" as the manufacturer claims? This line of products may be affordable, but after looking at the ingredients you may have your doubts that its even worth the asking price.

Ingredients at a Glance

There are tons of ingredients in the Regenerist™ line, many of them preservatives and stabilizers. The active ingredients featured on the official website include green tea, amino-peptide complex, vitamin B3, cucumber, comfrey, fruit extracts, pentapeptides, Pal-KTTKS, and allantoin.

Ingredients in Focus

The Olay® Regenerist™ formulas include a few components that may have a significant effect on facial skin. Allantoin, for instance, pulls water into the skin thereby smoothing out some fine lines by expanding the skin and helping shed dead cells. Pentapeptides may contribute to the skin’s collagen—a loss of peptides slows collagen production, a replenishment of peptides being vital to skin’s health as you age.

Beyond this, the Regenerist® formulas seem to be made with middle of the road ingredients. Vitamin E and B are fine and necessary for skin health, yet they need not be applied via beauty cream as they are consumed in most diets. And ingredient like Pal-KTTKS, which is a fragment of collagen, may promote collagen production but with no proof behind it this may simply be another quasi-useful component.

Final Thoughts

Regenerist™ products are fairly affordable, yes, but keep in mind that you will be getting a product comparable to the price you paid. While their restorative serums may cost a bit less, they do not include the complete Matrixyl 3000; their moisturizers may be cost effective but they also fail to include Hyaluronic Acid. And the lack of a wrinkle remover like Argireline is baffling, considering these products seem to be geared towards those with aging skin. We suggest looking for formulas that use quality ingredients, are still within a reasonable price range, and are guaranteed to leave you skin healthy and glowing.

For centuries, men have equated fair skin on ladies with beauty. Even today, although tan skin is appreciated in the west, most cultures prize fair skin. Men love fair beauties. Not the sickly white, corpse-like complexion, but fair, translucent and radiant with a healthy rosy flush.

With sun exposure, even wearing an SPF 50 sunblock will not prevent your skin from darkening. That fair, white complexion is hard to attain and just as hard to maintain.

In the past, women would stay out of the sun as far as possible in order to prevent their skin from darkening. If they had to go out in the sun, they would carry parasols to protect themselves from the sun's skin-darkening rays.

Whitening home remedies have been in existence for as long as fair skin has been in vogue. In the kitchen, a woman might mix egg white with lemon juice to use as a facial mask to lighten the skin.

Licorice root contains substances that fade away the pigmentation in the skin and hence is used in many skin lightening products. Hydroquinone is another potent skin lightening ingredient used in skin whitening treats. It disrupts the production of melanin and hence prevents skin from darkening. Arbutin is another skin lightening ingredient that works by inhibiting the production of melanin.

Many of the skin whitening products contain plant extracts to give you fairer skin. Mulberry, white mulberry and paper mulberry contain arbutin which makes skin fairer by preventing your skin from darkening. Elizabeth Arden's Prevage White Concentrate Brightening Serum has Soy Ferulate-C.

Most whitening skincare products make skin fairer by sloughing off the darkened surface of the epidermis. Alpha hydroxy acids like lactic acid and glycolic acid remove hyperpigmented skin cells and boost cell turnover, hence making skin fairer. Garnier light night overnight whitening peeling cream uses AHAs to peel the skin and slow down melanin production.

Then there are those that prevent skin from darkening by inhibiting melanin production. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its color. More melanin is produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Vitamin C, Kojic acid, Azelaic acid, Arbutin and Hydroquinone are substances often used in skin whitening products to lighten your skin through the inhibition of melanin production. Typically, whitening skincare products treat the epidermis at most. Recently, Lancome has come up with a range that treats the dermis as well as the epidermis. Since UV rays penetrate the dermis as well as the epidermis and causes inflammatory messengers to stimulate melanocytes to produce melanin which causes skin to darken, Lancome's blanc expert GN-White generating new whiteness spot eraser targets these inflammatory messengers on the epidermis and dermis to prevent the darkening of the skin.

This is done through the use of sphinganine and mint to neutralize those signals so that melanocytes aren't stimulated to make melanin.

Acetyl Glucosamine may be able to help regenerate damaged joints—whether this translates into support for damaged skin is unknown at this time. We do know that products like Matrixyl 3000 are able to heal the skin at the deepest levels, helping it to make its own collagen supply once more. It is fairly obvious that the Definity™ glucosamine complex does not do this as each product includes a dose of soluble collagen.

We wish Definity™ included an ingredient like Argireline to tackle fine lines. This amino acid complex acts like Botox but with none of the risk—topical application of Argireline results in relaxed skin creases and a smoother appearance.

How to Find the Best Skincare Products

What company has the best skincare products?  Well, that depends on who you ask.  Personally, I consult the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC).

WATCH OUT  for Harmful Ingredients

In my opinion, the best skincare products should not contain ingredients that either cause or are strongly suspected of causing cancer.  But, many of the popular brands do.  For example, Neutrogena makes an oil-free foundation that comes in a variety of shades.  Ingredients in the product have been linked to cancer, reproductive problems, allergies and a number of other health problems.

Environmental groups have petitioned the cosmetic industry for years to stop using these harmful ingredients.  But, since they can’t get legislation past cosmetic industry lobbyists, they decided to give consumers a way to found the safest and best skincare products on their own.

Read the Label

The EWG created a searchable database called Skin Deep.  At the site, they rate the safety of cosmetics based on the ingredients that they contain.  You might think that Avon has the best skincare products, but if you go to the Skin Deep site, you will learn that Avon’s skin clearing lotion contains ingredients that have been linked to cancer, as well as skin, eye and lung irritation.

As far as safety is concerned,  best skincare products are made by companies that have signed the CSC’s “compact for global production of safe health and beauty products”.  The CSC also has a searchable data base where you can see if your favorite companies have signed the compact. 

Big Names – Big Prices

I decided to look for some of the most expensive designer names, because, of course they claim to have the best skincare products .  How about Christian Dior?  No, apparently the company does not believe that a product that you use on your skin everyday should be safe.

I had always thought that designers like Helena Rubenstein, Elizabeth Arden, Estee Lauder, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent had the best skincare products, since the prices were so high.  My sister used to use only Elizabeth Arden cosmetics and fragrances.  But, none of these designer names are on the safe list.

You might think that the names that we “trust” the most would definitely sign the compact and be “pro” safety.  But, I looked for Ponds, Vaseline, Clinique, Revlon and Proctor & Gamble.  Obviously, they don’t make the safest and best skincare products, because, thus far, they have refused to sign the compact.

What does the compact ask companies to do?  Simply to meet the formulation standards and deadlines set by the European Union Directive in 2004, to replace hazardous compounds with safer alternatives within the next three years.  It doesn’t seem like much to ask of a cosmetic company.  You know why they won’t do it?

It’s the Money

Safer ingredients cost more.  They would have to raise the prices on some of their already outrageously high priced products or cut their advertising budget.  Most of these companies would not survive without advertising.  Their products are not good enough to have a “word of mouth” reputation.
