Mac OS X (leopard) will not mount a FAT32 partition on a multi- partition disk?
I used the latest version of gparted to create a FAT32 disk partition on an external drive, set up in addition to an existing HFS+ partition. I then turned on the external drive when connected to the mac and the FAT32 partition could not be mounted. Also, in Disk Utility, its "partition type" shows up at "Apple_UNIX_SVR2" (rather than saying "MS-DOS" or "FAT32" or whatever it's supposed to say).
So in other words, gparted claimed that it made a successful disk partition, but my Mac OS X Leopard installation cannot properly detect or mount it. Does anyone know of any solution to this issue?
I think the place you see "partition type" should read "partition map", but it's mostly symantics.
Apple_UNIX_SVR2 is the old Apple version of a UNIX-V file system partition map. Most folks don't know that Apple offered a version of UNIX back in 1988 for some of their computers.
I know nothing about gparted other than it is used to create second or third partitions on a drive without loosing data, but I don't see any need for it on a Leopard system. The Leopard version of Disk Utility, using the "Partition" tab, not the "Erase" tab, can setup the drive as one GUID partition map volume (the type used by Leopard for booting). After that, you can create two partitions, both GUID. Lastly, erase one partition as FAT32. This is how BootCamp works as well. I suppose the drawback is the drive doesn't have GUID partition map now, so you must backup all data on that drive before you create the GUID partition map. Creating the second partition does not necessarily erase any data, so long as you have enough free space on the drive for the second partition.
